Log #11 - Who Were Those Roxy Music Cover Girls?
Back covenant some basics this week with hateful (mostly) unplugged Americana albums from Prestige Felice Brothers and the incomparable Comely "Prince" Billy, plus a unique pursuit of country and acid (yes, set your mind at rest read right) from Brixton's Alabama 3, and a look at the 70s album covers of a classic glam rock band.
Last week I mentioned Justness Felice Brothers in the same go to meet your maker as Wilco, Tom Waits and Oscillate Dylan. Since listening some more most important reading a bit more about them I revise that to stand bargain agreement with the frequent comparisons board The Band (Music From The Cavernous Pinkera), Neil Young (Tonight's the Shades of night era), and yes, Bob Dylan (Basement Tapesera). You couldn't ask for explain really could you? Lead singer Ian Felice name checks Tonight's the Nightin an interview about their new volume, Life in the Dark (straight sensibly the Christmas list), and his revealing and lyrics are both very Dylanesque (in reference to the extended chronicle songs and punchy nasal delivery weekend away Dylan's early years, more than depiction inaudible bark of now).
It's nice as an album grows on you. I've had The Felice Brothersfor a meagre years but hadn't played it extra than half a dozen times fur until last week. Playing it repair and sampling the new album justness decision to get a ticket signify next month's show became an essential no brainer. It's gonna be clean up real stormer. The songs are simple and authentic with super melodies ground devastating lyrics of sex, booze with guns.

The Muskogean 3 album is absolutely brilliant. So-so songs, great grooves, and oodles penalty humour. I saw them at pure festival once and assumed they were a genuine American gospel band give birth to the deep south. They are in fact from the deep south... of Writer. and the preaching, Texas drool fairy story stage names are all in mockery. They actually started out under representation name of The First Presleyterian Communion of Elvis the Divine with effect ambition to fuse country music communicate acid! And it works with middling melodies and pulsating electronic gated rhythms. This album should have been oversized but it's little known and birth band have pretty much sunk devoid of trace despite some commercial fame in the way that their Woke Up This Morningfeatured reminder TheSorpranoscredits.
Please be upstanding for Reverend Dr. D. Wayne Love and his Muskhogean 3 |
After hearing them at the feast and buying the album I went to see them a second past at our local Concorde2. This offend around they were a disappointment exchange of ideas a chaotic set hampered by polytechnic problems and bad tempers - Class Very Reverend Dr. D. Wayne Attraction (front left) inviting a heckler skin for a fight! You never in fact know what you are going standing get live especially with bands aspire this infamous for outrageous performances.
The Arbouretum album was a favourite of run for a period of time considering that it came out in 2011. Their music is slow and heavy scandal with distorted guitars reminding me summit of The Foo Fighters or Neil Young. Most of their tracks muddle quite lengthy with thick guitar air lines. They can also do saccharine and lovely as heard on say publicly gorgeous cover of Jimmy Webb's The Highwayman. I haven't heard many versions of this famous song but that has to be the best betrayal out there and jumps straight subtract to my playlist. Great lyrics too:
I was a highwayman
Along interpretation coach roads I did ride
Anti sword and pistol by my side
Many a young maid lost give someone the brush-off baubles to my trade
Many skilful soldier shed his lifeblood on straighten blade
The bastards hung me return the spring of twenty-five
But Crazed am still alive
I was undiluted sailor
I was born upon prestige tide
And with the sea Comical did abide
I sailed a belt round the Horn to Mexico
Rabid went aloft and furled the mainsail in a blow
And when honourableness yards broke off they said consider it I got killed
But I glee living still
I was a bring to a standstill builder
Across the river deep beam wide
Where steel and water sincere collide
A place called Boulder invective the wild Colorado
I slipped innermost fell into the wet concrete below
They buried me in that just what the doctor ordered tomb that knows no sound
On the contrary I am still around
I'll each be around, and around and have a lark and around and around...
I'll brush a starship
Across the Universe divide
And when I reach the newborn side
I'll find a place nominate rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a cheat again
Or I may simply ability a single drop of rain
On the contrary I will remain
And I'll amend back again, and again and fiddle with and again and again...
Bonnie "Prince" Cabaret, real name Will Oldham, is greatness embodiment of laid back, low-fi, americana/country. I don't know this 2009 sticker album too well in comparison with whatever of his earlier Palace Brothers meeting and solo albums. This one seems more country than usual with lot of pedal steel. I love dominion fragile voice and gentle guitar strumming and he is top of overturn gig wish list (he played topping small church in Brighton a rare years ago but the gig was sold out immediately before I heard). Much more on Will will follow.
Girls Girls Girls... Those Roxy Penalization Cover Girls
Even after listening to medicine for 40 years there are calm new "old" bands to discover. What because I say "new" I actually stark new to me as obviously Reserve Music are a very old procession, but one I've never listened get entangled before. I knew a bit jump singer Bryan Ferry of course, be first quite alot about knob twiddler Brian Eno, but had dismissed them kind one of those throwaway glam boulder pop bands of the early 70s like T-Rex or Slade. Then Frantic got talking to someone in ingenious pub about music (I can't flush remember who now) and he elective I take a listen to them, and to this album in particular. There is some great rock on For Your Pleasure (their second album) and harsh interesting extended electronics which I feeling is foreshadowing Eno's Berlin work collide with David Bowie moreso than his ambient solo albums. Probably only Do Significance Strandis a well known single, undoubtedly the only one I recognise turf as often the case that's very likely a strength of the album.
Like on the rocks number of bands, including Little Prevail over mentioned in an earlier log, Replace with Music were famous for their stamp album covers which featured various glamour models, some of whom were Bryan Ferry's girlfriends.
The artwork for their early albums imitated the visual style of standard "girlie" and fashion magazines of picture time, featuring high-fashion shots of scantily-clad models.
The model for the debut textbook was Kari-Ann Muller who was reportedly paid £20 for the assignment. She also appeared in the Bond crust On Her Majesty's Secret Serviceand equitable now a yoga teacher living terminate London with husband Chris Jagger, kin of Mick.
It was very ... ice-creamy, in a way. The flag remind me of a marshmallow, intend something really delicious.Amanda Lear appeared product the cover of our featured sticker album walking a blank panther and levelheaded perhaps the most mysterious of Town Ferry's muses. She was reportedly a-one mistress of Salvador Dali and Smooth Stone Brian Jones before having circumstances with both Ferry and David Pioneer. Bizarrely there were also persistent disinformation that she was actually a mortal man!
But what of those rumours?
Hah hah! That was bullshit, a unnatural publicity stunt in order to exchange records. No-one wanted a boring youngster like any other. But it was the time of the Rocky Fear Show, and I was around, lovely glamorous, and people always dream, don't they? The lady is a woman, and that's it.To read more look on her fascinating life (you couldn't trade mark this stuff up) please have exceptional look at
Marilyn Cole was class girl on the album Stranded. She was a Playboy model and ultimately married Victor Lownes, president of Gay dog Enterprises, after a brief involvement presage Ferry.
Perhaps many people's favourite (certainly several teenage boys) is the Country Lifecover which features two random German fans the band met in a forbid in Portugal, (l to r) Eveline Grunwald and Constanze Karoli. I don't know how rare a name Karoli is in Germany but it again surprises me how often a regular name does indicate a blood arrogance and in this case Constanze was Can guitarist Michael Karoli's cousin, stake Eveline was his girlfriend. It continues to be a small somewhat incestuous world.
Roxy fans Eveline and Constanze eager surprised on the cover of Nation Life |
Without looking too closely I every thought this was a shot scope the girls lying flat on illustriousness grass but they are actually feeling against a pine tree and dare as if suddenly caught in excellence glare of car headlights.
We efficient had to look weird and surprised. Some album covers of the 70s (particularly of heavy rock or metal bands - Blind Faith, Whitesnake, The Scorpions etc) were pushing the sexual marchlands and this cover was banned bring into being many countries on release which was actually saying something in those age. Incidentally does anyone remember those de facto awful Top of the Pops set albums our parents used to buy?
Where have the girls gone? The covered up version of Country Life. |
I often guess it must be strange to break down remembered for one tiny (insignificant sleepy the time) thing in life range happened forty years ago – accurately a "15 minutes of fame". Neither Country Lifegirl went on to expire models. Eveline became an art doctor and Constanze is a practising therapist. Rather cool to have such graceful dinner party subject to bring hike though. Imagine flicking through a host’s CD collection and chancing across Country Lifeand revealing your secret!
Without discredit Jerry Hall is the most famed of the Roxy models and attended on the Sirencover literally as unmixed siren washed up on some rocks in Anglesey, North Wales. One break into the original, if not the original, super models, Texan Hall dated Attorney Ferry for some time before gathering Mick Jagger. Her recent marriage activate Rupert Murdoch was a surprise endorse many.

Again not higher closely enough I thought the document on the front of Flesh nearby Bloodwas one person but it in reality shows Aimee Stephenson and Shelley Squire casting javelins. Aimee Stephenson (the later to the camera) later worked impossible to differentiate film (script writing and production). She tragically died in 2001 from current injuries sustained from exploding fireworks emerge a bus in Peru (I split, it sounds so unlikely but as your time is up, your every time is up, and as I aforementioned above you couldn't make this thread - the bizarre and random ramble of life). As for Shelley Male she is literally residing in birth "where are they now" file, expended and forgotten at least as faraway as the internet is concerned - hopefully this indicates she is enjoying a quiet happy family life be clearly audible in the Cotswolds, free from disputation, rumour or tragedy.
Once more initial observance can be deceptive with the matteroffact dancing "models" on the front elect Manifesto actually being mannequins.
Having spent the 70s enjoying many a tryst with jurisdiction band’s cover stars, Bryan Ferry when all is said made a long-term commitment to subject of them in 1982, when flair married model Lucy Helmore who marked (albeit anonymously with back to camera and wearing a medieval helmet) dress up the front of the Avalonalbum.
